4 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD LEARN A SECOND LANGUAGE

For about half a year I tried to learn a new language. At the end of 2015, I thought about it and set it as a new year resolution. But I wasted so much time that I started later in the middle of 2016.

So today I wanna tell you something, why I started to learn a new language and why you should do the same.

  1. LANGUAGES CONNECTING PEOPLE

You know languages were used to communicate with other people or sometimes with other lives. For example, when a pet owner speaks with his dog or cat. And what I mean is, that as soon as you speak with another person by using a language, your create a connection between you two.

There are two ways to bring people together. You can do this with body language or with verbal language. And with body language, you can’t say anything. You can say: “Hello”, with a handshake. But you can not say: “How are you?”.

Or another example is, that when you go to a party and you don’t know anybody. Then you take a look at somebody and go to him or her and start to talk. You two can talk about everything that comes into your mind. And without words, it could be a silly situation. So it doesn’t matter which language you choose, but it matters that you use words.

2. LANGUAGES MAKE YOUR CREATIVE

It’s not a joke when I say, if you speak more than one language, the more creative you are. Many scientists find out, it doesn’t matter how good you are with another language. The only important thing is, that you can small talk in the other language with somebody. And that’s right.

But at the moment you think: “Why does it make me creative?”. The reason is, when you speak in another language you are more concentrate on the interaction with the other person. So the cells in your brain create much more connections between them. And that means you are not only concentrating on the words that you spell you are even concentrate on the words from the other person.

But this works much better when you travel to another country. So when you want to learn Spanish, then it could be better to take a trip to Spain.

3. TO SPEAK TWO OR MORE LANGUAGES MAKES YOU ATTRACTIVE

Yes, that’s even true. It doesn’t matter if you are a man or a woman. When somebody talks with you and hear that you can speak another language, then there should be a greater chance that he or she would like you. Why? Many people think if somebody can tell you a story in different languages than he or she must be more intelligent than others. And some studies confirmed that. But, that doesn’t mean, if you speak only one language then you are stupid.

4. TO SPEAKING A SECOND LANGUAGE CAN BOOST YOU CAREER

I think for the most industries it would be more and more important to speak a second language. Some years ago it was more focused on the IT industry, but now there were more new jobs created than we had 15 years ago. I live in Berlin and I work at an e-commerce company. We sell clothes worldwide. But every day when I drive to my work, I see a lot of people who speaks English, Spanish, Russian, Turkish, Arabic and many other languages.

So we have a big culture here, now. And when I go to a supermarket and then the cashier talks with them in their language. I mean some years ago, we can’t imagine that. And now, it’s natural.

So, what I wanna tell you now is that it could be a big personal gain to speak a second language. And it doesn’t matter whether you learn a language that many people around you speaks or if you choose a language that looks interesting for you.

For example, in school I learned French. Then some years later I learned English and now I chose Russian. And it makes a lot of fun.
